ETFE Greenhouse System
AgriTech North has developed a Greenhouse which uses three layer ETFE cushions as cladding. Currently in use at our Dryden ON facility, the ETFE covering offers many benefits to growers compared to traditional glass or plastic walled greenhouses. Designed to be easily replicated and operated in far north and remote communities, this greenhouse costs 50% less to heat compared to traditional greenhouses and can hold its own snow load.
ETFE
ETFE is a fluorine-based polymer chemically related to Tyvek house wrap. The material is resistant to hot and cold conditions and is hydrophobic, making it easy to clean and resistant to snow build up.
ETFE sheets used to construct the greenhouse cladding have a weight of 0.525 kg per m² compared to ~30kg per m² for double paned glass. The flexible nature of the sheets allow them to be rolled or stacked for shipping making them easier to transport, one of the most important factors for constructing greenhouses in far north and remote communities.
ETFE Cushion
The ETFE cushions undergo less than half an air change per day and are inflated at a pressure of about 30 psi.
The air cushions within the ETFE cladding offer tremendous insulation resulting in 50% savings in heat energy compared to standard greenhouses.
With these cushions along with the lightweight cladding, our ETFE greenhouse can support incredible amounts of weight. Allowing it to support its own snowload while inflated or deflated. This reduces the amount of maintenance required and increases the longevity of the structure.
Our ETFE cushion has comparable solar transmissivity to double paned glass. Allowing all the same functionality as traditional glass greenhouses.
